This website brings back many great memories at the Norton AFB 63 MAW Aircrew Life Support Shop. I was there from 4/81 to 1/85. Greg

Very nice site, found it while browsing. I served from 01/1971 until 03/1975. I was stationed at MacDill AFB with the 94th TFS on F4-Es. Then I joined the Georgia Air National Guard and served 5 years at Dobbins AFB, working on F-100s and then F-105Gs. I enjoyed Life Support. I was E-6 upon departure from there. Had some great times and would like to hear from someone I knew.
Hi great site, I was in life support starting in 1968 after graduating from Chanute I went to the 4677th DSES at Hill AFB Ut. In 1971 I went to Viet-Nam with the 5TH Special Forces Group (Airborne). In 1972 I returned to Hill with the 1550th Aircrew Training and Test Wing.In 1973 I went to Ramstein with the 512th TFS and in 1977 to Torrejon AB Spain in the 614th TFS. I returned to the states in 1981 and got that SAC Stink on me there. I returned to USAFE in 1983 to 81 TFW at Bentwaters and in 1986 went over to the 20th TFW at Upper Heyford. In 1988 came back to the states to Barkssdale AFB La.
Hi, I just found this site.Didn't recognize any names, but maybe someone might remember me and sqwawk back at me. I was in Life Support from June 54 to April 74. Some of my assignments were Eglin AFB 54-57, Patrick Afb, 57-58,Sidi Slimane AB, 58-59. Donaldson AFB,59-62, Hunter AFB, 62-64, Myrtle Beach AFB,64-66, Torrejon AB,66-67, Hahn AB, 67-68, Ent AFB & Peterson Fld, 68-74. This didnt include a whole bunch of TDY time. If anyone remembers me from some of these "strafing runs", I'd sure like to swap some war stories.
Cool site.
This is an interesting site.
I'm retiring from the ACC IG team after 20 years in the LS business. It's been an education for me and I leave those still serving with this -- Our aircrew protection community is an insurance policy, of which our end product hopefully not be used. Doing so means a valuable combat aircraft is lost and precious life is at stake. When they do pull that handle however, we find out if striving for perfection was fruitful. Anytime an aircrew member escapes a deadly situation and returns to his or her family alive, bottle of Beam or not, we've all completed our mission and we've all earned our place. I will say however, that it is an incredibly rewarding feeling when an aircrew member reaches out with the same hand he used to pull that handle to shake yours, and with the other, hands you a bottle of Beam.
Hi Folks, You deserve a lot of credit for developing and maintaining this website, hats off! Tony

I truly enjoy getting the newsletter. It brings back great memories of my 22 years in Life Support. After my retirement in 1979, I spent 20 years working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Chief Joseph Dam in Bridgeport Washington (a hydroelectric dam on the Columbia river) I retired from the USACE in July of 2000. As i'm "long in the tooth" I am also receiving social security. I guess that makes me a member of the "triple dipper" club. I appreciate all the time it takes to keep the newletter afloat. Please keep up the good work.

Great website...I've been been meaning to browse it for a while. Now that I'm retired, I've got the time to see what I've been missing! We need to get some photo's added in there from THIS century! Just kidding-It's really great to see where we came from. If any Life Supporters are ever in the Dayton Ohio area, give me a call and I'll get you into the laboratories where we're developing helmets and other stuff that makes Star Wars look lame.

Hello to all those life support folks I so dearly remember. Seems like a life time ago (February 1974)that I arrived in Bitburg, Germany. There I worked for Don Wogomon (now deceased) and Max Handly (lost track of him). At the Wing was someone most of you will know quite well...Tommy Thompkins. Wow, it is amazing the stories that are coming back to me...but, I am simply running out of time to right much more. So, long story short, I retired in 1997 from Moody AFB in Valdosta, Georgia. I now live in east Tennessee (close to my childhood home) and work as a law enforcement dispatcher for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hello to all those I have shared many long hours with.

For a small career field we all seem to get around a lot. I'm glad ALS is not one of those career fields that they have done away with or combined with another. Active duty ALS keep charging forward. I was an instructor at the AF Personal Equipment Technical School at Chanute AFB from April, 1963 until July, 1966. Students who went through the school on "B" shift (1200-1800 MON-FRI)would likely have been in at least one of the classes I taught as I taught all six "blocks" at various times. Just got a computer two weeks ago, my daughter is proud that I finally made it to the 21st century. Got a call from L.C. Ford tonight, he turned me on to the website. My wife does most of the computer stuff as I am still in 3 level tng on it and she doesn't really trust me around it. I retired here at Little Rock, AFB in 87 and haven't kept up with anything life support wise since. We have been going over the website for the past 2 hours and still haven't looked at everything yet. I won't go on too long but would like to say hey to a few old friends I haven't seen in a long time. Hi to Dave Candland, John Green, James P. Even though I separated from active duty, I was in Life Support for a tad bit over 10 years.
Entered the Air Force back in '86 from Honolulu, Hawaii. After completing basic training, I continued on to Tech. school at Chanute AFB, IL. Then the shocker, I was sent to K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI. Talk about cold <BURRRrrr...>. Spent three years there trying to keep warm and working on the KC-135's and B-52's. I received orders to Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. Loved it so much that I spent over 7 consecutive years there (until I separated). I was the Life Support trainer for 5 years for the 909th Air Refueling Squadron. I always enjoyed working with Life Support, knowing that if our equipment was to be used, it would save that person's life! It's amazing how I found this website. I had no idea this was here! I still have friends that are active duty and in Life Support and will be sure to pass this link on to them.
To all you Life Support'ers (past, present & future) Life Support "Your life is our business"
I can't believe that I don't see not one person I knew from Life Support here. But after they get the word, I'm sure they'll at least visit here. If any of you know me, please drop me a line.
I'm now currently working Civil Service for AFNEWS (Air Force News Agency) in San Antonio, TX. Not sure how long I'll be here, but no matter what, I'll always treasure my time as a Life Supporter!
Take Care and Best of All ! ! !

Although I was only in Life Support for a very short four years, I enjoyed the career field alot. I was at Chanute in 1977 and then went to Kadena AB with the RF4's from March 78-Aug 79. Worked with Reginald "Shep" Shepherd, who nicknamed me "Jake", which stuck the whole time I was there. I then went to Norton AFB and worked for Msgt Dave Candland at the 63rd MAW and met my husband of almost 22 years, Frederick "Robby" Robinson. We worked with alot of great people and I look forward to seeing you at the reunion in June..ya see..we live in Henderson NV and won't miss this one. See you there. Former Air Force Life Supporter guy here. I was in the USAF from 1992 til 1998. I spent my whole career @ RAF LAkenheath, England, with F-15 Strike Eagles. I've been fortunate enough to work for Boeing in St.Louis and now with a subsidiary of Boeing in Meridian, MS, contracted w/ the NAvy, maintaining Flight Equipment in a Training Squadron, flying with T-45C's, the Navy's newest trainer. I had the privilege of meeting Chief(R)Rooney in 1996 when he and his team came to Lakenheath to train our squadron for Combat Edge. Boy has that training come in handy dealing with the Navy & Marine pilots floating through here before they go to the Rag and FLeet to fly. Thanks Chief!!! Love the site and hope too see more things added to it like a discussion board and forum. The Navy has a Parachute Rigger(PR) website and it is nicely setup. It is www.prigger.com. One of the things I do is maintain a complete database of Vietnam Era POW/MIAs derived and updated from the official releases of the Defense Department. This data base often gets updated weeks before the OFFICIAL one.
http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/pow-mia/ is the link site. To provide the airmen and others with training to come back alive was and is one of the FIRST thoughts of a ALS worker, and the feelings of support for those whose return is long delayed is another facet of what we have all done. I feel the repatriation of remains is one of those "unfinished" tasks.
Please join me in a moment of respect for all those, in all branches who crossed the line, and did not return.

I was Chief of Life Support TAC, 1970-1974 + or - I'd like to think we contributed much to the effort during those years. I met and worked with so many outstanding and totally dedicated people in Life Support, the list would fill the internet. I'll just say Thanks again, and hope to see you all soon. Warmest Regards Jim Downey USAF Major Retired, Fighter pilot and Life Supporter.

The site is Outstanding. Just got of the phone with my first supervisor at Homestead (Reid Nieman). Had not talked to him in about 10 years or seen him in 25 years. He told me this site was out there. So many memories came back when seeing old friends names and current ones who were airmen and now TSgt's, MSgt's and higher. There was never a career field, nor will there ever be a career field that can stand taller or be prouder than AIRCREW LIFE SUPPORT.

What a great site! Just happened to stumble upon it from the HQ ACC site. Lots of familiar names, lots of names which aren't there either. I retired in 96 at Barksdale, worked as a purchasing agent for a fire protection firm for several years, now back "behind the fence" at Barksdale as a civilian. Should of done this years ago, what was I thinkin? Keep up the good work everyone!

What a great sight! It's good to see a lot of familiar faces. I am very grateful to have been touched by the Life Support family through my father, the late CMSgt John M. Shields and all the great folks that helped guide me as a child. I sure wish I could find the sort of mentoring that I have witnessed from this group in my USAF endures.
Thanks and God Bless,
John Shields

Hello Life Supporters! I am the late Chief John Shields' daughter. I was happy to find your web site and see so many familiar names. My Dad spoke of many of you quite often and I know that I have met many of you over the years as well. It means a lot to me to read your stories and see that my Dad is still remembered and quoted. I have asked to be put on your newsletter list so that I may keep current with what is going on with what was such a huge part of Dad's life. The Air Force was a great family for him and for us as well. You all that know me-- feel free to email I would love to hear from you.

The website is great!! It is fantastic to look at the address book and get to see names of friends from years past with numbers and now email addresses to contact them. To all the active duty members now, thank you for your contribution and sacrifices you are making for our freedom, and to those of you that might remember me...please drop me a line, it would be great to hear from you.

Hi, I just wanted to comment on your link to the story about Jane Fonda. I, too, received that email in which many stories are told about POWs' experiences with her. Outraged, I looked it up on the internet and found this story: http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa110399.htm I think it might be of some interest to you.
I do think your website is great, though. I've been in Life Support for almost 4 yrs now, and I think it's great that we have a website especially for us. Thank you!

Hello to all who remember me - I was the 242X0 "gas bag" at the Personnel Center who used to do the enlisted Life Support assignments in the late 80's -early 90's. I've been retired for almost 12 years and am now working in the chem/bio arena again. I have seen many, many familiar names while browsing around this truly awesome and professional website -it's a site that Life Supporters can be very proud of. Best wishes to everyone!!
